RAWALPINDI, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 30th Aug, 2026) Doctors at Holy Family Hospital (HFH) Rawalpindi have successfully reattached the hand of a five-year-old boy that was completely amputated by a cleaver through a complex replantation surgery.
The child, a resident of Jhelum, sustained the serious injury when a toka (heavy cutting tool) completely severed his hand.
He was shifted to HFH in critical condition, where a team of specialists led by Plastic Surgery Department doctors Dr. Tayyab and Dr. Ambreen immediately decided to perform emergency surgery.
Using advanced micro-surgical techniques, the medical team successfully replanted the severed hand and restored blood circulation.
During the lengthy and complex procedure, the surgeons meticulously repaired the blood vessels, veins and other vital structures to reconnect the hand with the child’s body.
According to the doctors, replantation surgery in young children is highly complex and time-sensitive.
They said the chances of successful reattachment depend significantly on timely transportation to a hospital, proper preservation of the severed limb and the immediate availability of an experienced micro surgical team.
Medical experts advised the public that in case of complete amputation of a body part, the severed limb should not be placed directly on ice.
Instead, it should be wrapped or placed in a clean plastic bag, which should then be placed inside another container containing ice.
Direct contact between the severed part and ice or ice water should be avoided to prevent further tissue damage.
Doctors further advised that the injured person should be shifted immediately to a medical facility equipped with microsurgery and replantation services, while the severed part should be taken along with the patient.
The successful procedure was made possible by the prompt response and expertise of the HFH medical team in complex microsurgical procedures, giving the five-year-old child an opportunity to regain function in his reattached hand.
