Pakistan Peoples Party AJK leadership on Monday urged the newly-elected government to prioritize restoration of peace in Poonch and Sudhanoti and immediately hold elections on the remaining seven seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly in the two districts

MIRPUR, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 31st Aug, 2026) Pakistan Peoples Party AJK leadership on Monday urged the newly-elected government to prioritize restoration of peace in Poonch and Sudhanoti and immediately hold elections on the remaining seven seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly in the two districts.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, former AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, PPP AJK President and Opposition Leader Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin, and former AJK President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan said the party’s seven-month government was formed “not for politics, but to save the state and restore public trust” amid serious political and administrative challenges.

Rathore said the PPP government had taken key steps to address employees’ long-pending issues including promotions and regularization, resolved cases dating back to 2021, and made beldars permanent. He added that Rs10 billion was allocated to help AJK Bank achieve scheduled bank status, while property tax was brought at par with Punjab. He said tourism and agriculture were given special focus, with the first-ever agriculture conference held and a development roadmap prepared.

The government also maintained close coordination with Islamabad and sought financial relief, though AJK could not receive even Rs9 billion out of the Rs159 billion variable grant, he added.

Criticizing the PML-N, Rathore alleged “worst rigging” in recent elections and said the party had preferred politics over the state. He demanded a “Poonch Package” from the federal government and said elections in seven constituencies of Poonch were essential to uphold people’s right to vote.

PPP AJK President Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin said the PPP had always prioritized state interests and democratic values. He highlighted the establishment of 5 universities and 3 medical colleges during PPP tenures, with around 350 students now pursuing MBBS.He stressed that a strong Pakistan was key to Kashmir’s freedom and said the flawed system was the root cause of AJK’s problems. “Political parties must rise above personal interests and prioritize the state,” he said.

The press conference was also attended by Mian Abdul Waheed, Abdul Majid Khan, Qasim Majeed Chaudhry, Dewan Chughtai, Farzana Yaqoob, Zobia Khursheed Raja and Ahmed Sagheer.
